The artist team worked with project architects to create seating areas,
planter walls and fountains that, together, form an inviting corner park
at the Gateway Transit Center in downtown Los Angeles. Surfaces are covered
in colorful ceramic tile, mostly hand painted and/or sculptural. While
the artists worked together on the trio of fountains as a concept in the
common use of ceramic tile, each fountain reflects the individual artist's
styles.
The
artists, accomplished in their respective careers, came together for the
first time on this project. Established in 1989, the Metro Art Department
of Metropolitan Transit Authority has commissioned more than 225 artists
for a wide variety of both temporary and permanent projects. Recognizing
that art can bring a touch of humanity to a mundane commute, MTA commissions
artists to incorporate art into a number of transportation sites and projects.
