Innovation happens here. It's not just a slogan; it's how we are building a better water future for Southern California.
Metropolitan's has a growing portfolio of programs and activities to support innovation and entrepreneurs. If you have a great idea, chances are the Business Outreach program can help you find answers, partners, and opportunities. Our goal is to help with business development and accelerate innovation to market. Some of our programs are:
Technology Approval Group – TAG is a quarterly forum of public and private water agencies that evaluates emerging technologies in the water sector. Innovators make their pitch, receive feedback and are offered next steps. TAG has motivated and mentored a diversity of technologies, including a company capturing the energy produced by water main flows, another exploring how to reduce the cost of treating water with ultraviolet radiation, and another finding new ways to detect leaks in large pipes.
Technology Review and Feedback Program – TRiF similarly offers innovators and entrepreneurs an opportunity to pitch their innovation or technology to Metropolitan, its member agencies and their partners. Pitches are made in writing, reviewed by staff and potentially invited for an in-person evaluation. The program offers innovators an opportunity to receive valuable industry feedback and gives agencies the chance to discover early stage technologies. Entrepreneurs can also benefit from the TRiF's innovation network of resources for funding, pilot programs, and assistance in determining technical and market viability.
Tech Connect – Tech Connect is a virtual incubator that links the innovation community, a LinkedIn for water. Innovators and entrepreneurs can connect with one another, share their experiences, seek advice, find mentors and reach out to potential investors. Tech Connect brings together academics, entrepreneurs, investors, attorneys and others working in the innovation ecosystem in all areas of water, from wastewater to watershed management.
Our Business Outreach program also supports more than 200 matchmaking events, conferences and workshops annually and helps with funding, marketing, pilot programs and business development.
Strategic partnerships include a presence at the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI), Imagine H2O, American Water Works Association, Cleantech San Diego and many more.
