The Internship Program trains, educates and prepares pre-professionals for careers in the water industry. College undergraduates will gain practical work experience through a paid temporary job assignment related to their academic/educational field of study. Interns learn about the water industry while applying classroom theories and concepts to “real-world” work situations.

Duties

  • Performs research as assigned and applies academic theory, training and education to real life work situations and environments.
  • Participates on project teams as required.
  • Learns and assists with tasks related to their areas of discipline and assigned area of responsibility.
  • Learns and assists with planning, conducting studies/research and compiling information from various sources; provides updates and prepares reports.
  • Learns and assists with collecting and analyzing statistical data; generates and maintains records and report findings; makes recommendations.
Salary Information
Undergraduate students with junior standing are compensated at an hourly rate of $15.00.

Undergraduate students with senior standing are compensated at an hourly rate of $18.00.

Work Schedule
Intern work hours will vary and be mutually agreed on between the intern and his/her Supervisor. Intern work hours may not exceed 20 hours per week or 960 hours in a fiscal year.

Hiring Process
Prospective candidates will participate in a streamlined selection process which may include a panel interview. Prior to hiring, applicants will be required to:

  • Pass a pre-employment screening process to include a reference check and background / security check.
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship, legal residence and eligibility to work in the U.S. Please see I-9 form.

Terms and Conditions

  • An internship at MWD does not guarantee full time employment with the agency.
  • MWD does not provide benefits, vacation pay, holiday pay, or overtime pay for interns.
  • All interns must adhere to MWD’s dress guidelines and observe all safety rules and regulations at all times.

  Minimum Requirements
  • Current enrollment in an accredited four-year college or university carrying a minimum of 12 semester units or 8 quarter units
  • Junior or senior standing in a related major
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License
Application Procedure

  • A completed MWD Application for Employment.
  • Statement of Purpose: a brief statement of purpose describing your reason(s) for pursuing admission to the MWD Internship Program and your career and academic goals.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges you have attended. All Official Transcripts must be in a sealed envelope marked “Official Transcripts”.
