SPECIAL FEATURES OF MEMBER AGENCY

Torrance joined Metropolitan as one of its original cities.

The Municipal Water Department is implementing a multi-year $30 million capital improvement program to enhance reliability, upgrade facilities, diversify source of supply and lower long term operating costs.

Major projects completed or in process include the replacement of over 30 miles of water mains, distribution system improvements, new wells and a groundwater production site, reconstruction of a major pump station, the rehabilitation of a major pump station, the rehabilitation of existing wells and the ancillary facilities and automation of operations.

As a result of a tri-party partnership agreement, the Municipal Water Department is supplying the Mobil Oil Refinery in Torrance with approximately 7,000 acre-feet of reclaimed water annually, which represents two-thirds of the refinery's demand.

In addition, several landscape irrigation customers have or are in the process of being converted to reclaimed supplies. The conversion to reclaimed water in the above areas increases available potable water equivalent to the annual usage of nearly 25,000 families.
