Metropolitan Water District General Manager Deven Upadhyay issues the following statement regarding the California Department of Water Resources’ second snow survey of the season:
“Though January has been relatively dry, we are hopeful that our state will receive more rain and snow in the coming months to build on the snowpack that accrued in December. But regardless of what the rest of the winter brings, Metropolitan is prepared to deliver reliable water supplies to Southern California, thanks to our investments in diverse supplies, storage and conservation.
“The latest increase in the State Water Project allocation to 20% amounts to approximately 100,000 acre-feet of additional water for Metropolitan this year. That will allow us to meet more local demands with state project supplies and reduce our withdrawals from storage, increasing regional reliability.
“Metropolitan started this year with a record amount of water in storage – 3.8 million acre-feet, which will ensure that we are prepared for next year, should more severe dry conditions return to the state.
At the same time, we continue our focus on diversifying the region’s water supplies with local supply projects like Pure Water Southern California, investing in storage, increasing the flexibility of our water system and supporting Southern Californians’ commitment to saving water.”
