One Water__

One water. Earth’s water resources are finite – part of a cycle that moves water continuously on, above and below the surface. There is no more water and no less water now than there was two billion years ago or ever will be. And that is the definition of precious.

Water Sources__

When you look at, touch or drink water, you do not know its source. It may be treated water pumped from below ground, or snowmelt carried in rivers and transported in aqueducts from hundreds of miles away. It may be water once used and recycled, or even treated wastewater or water desalted from the ocean or groundwater wells.

Facing Challenges__

In the same way that the possible sources of water are invisible to the eye, the solutions to water challenges brought by climate change and drought have no clear boundaries. Answers may reside with different constituencies and with many different agencies in Southern California and the western states that share water resources and their challenges. Exploring solutions together is the vision of One Water.

Looking Ahead__

There’s no doubt that Southern California will always need imported water. That’s why we, and those water pioneers before us, invested so heavily in the engineering marvels like the State Water Project and the Colorado River Aqueduct. And the vital reservoirs that today hold record amounts of water.

Innovation__

But today we must do more. We must reduce our dependence on imported water and expand local and drought resistant supplies by integrating smart water management into our infrastructure to diversify our water portfolio. We need to embrace innovation by exploring many avenues that include an advanced treatment facility to treat wastewater for another round of use.

Working Together__

We need to include all voices and ideas as leaders in conservation and support other local recycling projects and water-use efficiency upgrades. Working together - balancing needs with realistic solutions, is to everyone’s benefit. We are one state. We must all be part of the solution.
